Bungalow Transformation to Modern House

A client purchased a rundown bungalow in a village in Northern Cumbria, seeking to revitalise the property through an extension and enhancement. This traditional vernacular building is set amidst a spacious garden next to the picturesque River Eden. The client’s vision was to preserve high-quality materials, including the green slate roof and red sandstone walls while maximizing natural light and views throughout the home.

I collaborated closely with the client to design an extension that transformed the house into a spacious open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area, all strategically oriented to take in the stunning views and seamlessly connect with the garden. Featuring an oak-framed structure with glass corner windows, the extension bathed the space in natural light and allowed for easy access to the garden through large sliding doors concealed within the oak frame. Additionally, we expanded the first floor to include more bedrooms and modern bathrooms, complete with dormer windows that framed the picturesque landscape. A generous oak-framed sunroom was incorporated into the side elevation, offering a private, light-filled retreat where the client’s family could relax and enjoy the terrace and garden, further brightening the existing sitting room.

A new front porch with oak-framed glazing improved the entrance to the property, offering a welcoming approach. Inside, natural light flooded the hall from new rooflights positioned over the staircase. The energy efficiency of the existing building was significantly enhanced with highly insulated extensions and new insulation in the original areas. Underfloor heating was installed to provide a comfortable, consistent warmth throughout the home.

I took on the architect role for the entire project, guiding it from the initial phases to completion (RIBA stages 0-5). My responsibilities included providing full architectural design services, securing planning permission, and creating detailed drawings and documentation for building control and construction purposes. I drafted the specifications, oversaw the tender process, and managed contract administration on-site. The project culminated in a successful transformation of the space into a bright and airy sanctuary that skillfully retains the charming character of the original bungalow while effortlessly catering to the family's contemporary needs.
