‘Greystones’ is an innovative and sensitively designed house in an Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty in Yorkshire. It replaces a run-down house, providing a
house for the 21 st Century with energy efficient design and reduced water run-off
systems. Its design takes advantage of the sloping levels on the site to create a
stepped house that connects with the upper and lower gardens and with the
outstanding views available.
Planning approval was given for extensions to the original house and then for
replacement of this larger house with a new, more efficient house. The design took
inspiration from local Yorkshire vernacular forms, using the long-narrow form of
barns to create the central core of the building. The lower wings of the house were
designed as a counterpoint with green turf roofs which allowed the upper levels of
the house to enjoy views over them to the surrounding gardens and countryside.
Local materials such as Harrogate stone and slate roofing were employed alongside
timber cladding and aluminium windows and doors to create a house that reflects its
setting whilst providing contemporary elements.
Internally, the house has a contemporary, minimalist design whilst the large windows
and double-height space in the living room provide drama and a visual and practical
connection to nature.
